HELP! REASON 11 FILLED MY HARD DRIVE!

HOW TO MAKE ROOM ON YOUR PC | Reason Studios

So I just upgraded to the new Reason 11 Suite…

I was so pumped to dive into all the new effects and instruments, but the C drive on my laptop didn’t have enough room!

After running Disk Cleanup, deleting old files by hand and moving archives to an external drive it still wasn’t enough.

My RE folder was already at 17GB before the update and would grow to over 32GB after downloading the new upgrade; I needed a more drastic solution.

So I dug through the internet archives (or I reworded my google search several times) until I found an old thread on the ReasonTalk forum (check it out here). Way back in 2017 user Mind2069 experienced this same issue: downloading his new rack extensions had filled up his C:/ drive while there was plenty of space available on his secondary hard drive.

Lucky for me, you and Mind2069, two users named OldGoat and Carly(Poohbear) were there with some great advice:

Use the Windows Command Prompt to set up a Junction Point.

Now be warned: this is a precise maneuver and a few key steps have to be followed.

Here’s a step by step guide:

1) Copy your Rack Extension folder to the new location.

This folder is located at:

C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Roaming/Propellerhead Software

Sounds simple enough, but on my Windows 10 computer the AppData folder was not visible. It’s a hidden folder.

To find it, open File Explorer (any folder) and type %AppData% into the address bar up top.

This will bring you to C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Roaming/

Scroll down to Propellerhead Software and copy it to the new location,

I chose: D:/Program Files/Propellerhead Software

2) Rename the folder “Propellerhead Software” as “Propellerhead Software_”

It is vital that you rename the folder.

If you leave it the same you will get an error message while attempting step 4.

Again and again…

Trust me…

This is also so you have a backup copy of the folder on C: in case this doesn’t work right the first time.

3) Open the Command Prompt and Run as Administrator:

Click the Start menu and type “CMD”

Command Prompt will appear in the list

Right Click and select “Run as Administrator”

4) Enter the following command, then press Enter:

mklink /j “C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Roaming/Propellerhead Software” “D:/Program Files/Propellerhead Software”

(Use your user name in place of “USERNAME”)

Type it all before hitting enter, it’s OK if the text wraps to the next line on its own. It’s important to spell slowly and carefully because it’s super hard to edit text once typed into command prompt. You can, however, copy/paste from previous commands you have written, which are stored just above.

5) Check Reason and Delete the Renamed Folder

Start Reason, if everything is running well, you may remove the backup you made in Step 2 (“C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/AppData/Roaming/Propellerhead Software/RackExtensions_”)

Enjoy Reason 11!
